A 200-level male student at the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, in Kwara State, reportedly committed suicide due to financial difficulties.
According to report, the deceased, whose name was unknown, was from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences.
It was also discovered that the student had a total grade point average of 4.5 at the Department of Mass Communication before his tragic demise.
The incident occurred at his private residence located at Oke-Odo axis of Tanke community, Ilorin, the state capital.
Sources in the university community, who spoke to newsmen, said that the deceased committed suicide due to financial challenges facing him.
It was also learnt that the deceased lost his father a few years ago, while his mother, a retired school teacher, had taken over financial responsibility for his academics since.
The deceased’s financial crisis reportedly started when he resumed school last year.
The development is said to have made his colleagues to raise some funds to pay his tuition fees and buy foodstuffs for him.
However, it was gathered that the deceased decided to take a poisonous substance last weekend, just after his roommate had left for lectures, leaving a note which stated his inability to cope with his financial situation.
His roommate was said to have raised the alarm on the incident when they returned from lectures.
A top administrative officer in the school’s management, who requested anonymity, confirmed the occurrence to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday.
He called the incident as disturbing and said it had put the campus in grief.
