A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday at Pen Cinema, Agege, when a motorcyclist collided with a trailer, resulting in his immediate death.
Our reporter gathered that the situation escalated when a large group of motorcycle riders attacked a police patrol team sent to the scene with the motive of evacuating the trailer.
According to the police, which confirmed the incident to our reporter on Saturday, the incident occurred around 01:40am when a distress call was made regarding the fatal collision at Wemco Junction, Mobil Road.
In response, the patrol team was dispatched to the location to manage the situation.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the rider died on the spot.
Speaking on how the officer died from an attack by the mob, Hundeyin said, “A patrol team was mobilised to the scene. On arrival, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders gathered. However, in the process of evacuating the truck away from the scene, the patrol team came under attack by the motorcycle riders, who insisted on torching the truck.
“During the attack, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, a 46-year-old officer, was hit on the head. Sadly, he died at the scene from his injuries. The truck driver managed to flee during the chaos.”
The police further stated that the bodies of the deceased were transported to Mainland General Hospital Morgue in Yaba for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, the police noted five suspects have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved in the attack.
“Five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt for other fleeing suspects is ongoing. Further development will be communicated,” Hundeyin added.
