Gunmen attack Anambra meeting, 19 feared dead

Date:

Suspected gunmen operating in two sports utility vehicles (SUVs) opened fire on a meeting in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Monday evening, leaving at least 10 people confirmed dead by police, with local reports suggesting a much higher toll of 19 fatalities.

The assailants reportedly stormed a venue where individuals identified as indigenes of Ebonyi State were holding a meeting, immediately unleashing a hail of bullets on the attendees.

The motive behind the brutal attack remains unclear. While some speculate it could be a violent enforcement of the proscribed “sit-at-home” protest often observed on Mondays, others suggest an internal disagreement within the targeted group, noting that the gunmen reportedly demanded minutes of the meeting.

A video circulating widely on social media depicts a harrowing scene with numerous corpses strewn across the ground, accompanied by the anguished wails of onlookers.

He said: “The armed criminals came in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and attacked the gathering of a group unprovoked, shooting sporadically.

“The victims were rushed to the Hospital and regrettably, 10 (ten) people were confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”
