Police officers have arrested a suspect who disguised as a policeman to provide escort allegedly aimed at evading police checks.
BREAKINGNG learnt that the suspect, Ajayi Olumide, was arrested by officers at a checkpoint on the highway with suspect putting on a police uniform and possessing an identity card of the police.
A source in the police told our reporter on Saturday that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday night alongside a Lagos-based driver while they were going on a Cabstar vehicle loaded with building materials.
“The Safer Highway Patrol Team were conducting a stop-and-search operation at Alalafia Village along the Ijebu Ode/Benin-Ore Expressway.
“During the operation, one Ajayi Olumide, aged 45, was arrested.

“The suspect was on escort duty for a Nissan Cabstar vehicle with registration number Lagos MUS 685 YJ, loaded with building materials and driven by one Bamidele Fasola of No. 50 Basorun Street, Dopemu, Lagos,” the source said.
He added that “At the time of the arrest, the suspect was wearing a police T-shirt and displayed a police identity card identifying him as a sergeant.”
When contacted for details, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect later claimed to be a dismissed police officer.
“Upon further questioning, he claimed to be a dismissed policeman,” Odutola said.
Details of where the vehicle was heading are still sketchy, but a source added that the building materials were likely Lagos-bound.
However, the PPRO noted that a probe had commenced into the incident.
“Both the suspect and the exhibits have been taken and referred to the Division Police Station, Ogbere, for discreet investigation,” she told our reporter.
