Three masqueraders remanded in prison for flogging Enugu residents

An Enugu Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of three individuals accused of assaulting residents during the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration in Nsukka.

The suspects—Emeka Eze, 33; Omeke Uchechukwu, 22; and Malachi Nnaemeka, 30—were arrested on Tuesday by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command following disturbing reports and viral videos showing masqueraders attacking members of the public along Aku Road on June 22.

The trio was arraigned on a three-count charge, including conspiracy, extortion by threats, and causing grievous bodily harm.

They were subsequently remanded in custody, with the court adjourning the case to July 31, 2025.

Police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that one male victim sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised as a result of the assault.

“With help from members of the community, the three suspects were apprehended while others involved remain at large,” Ndukwe stated.

He added that the Commissioner of Police has directed intensified efforts to track down and arrest the remaining members of the masquerade group still on the run.
