Controversial social media commentator Daniel Regha has once again stirred the waters of the Nigerian music scene, this time taking aim at Senegalese-American singer Akon over his relationship with Nigerian superstar Wizkid.
In a post on X that quickly gained traction online, Regha alleged that Akon has leveraged Wizkid’s fame to maintain his own relevance in the music industry.

He accused the veteran artist of repeatedly mentioning Wizkid in interviews, not out of genuine admiration, but as a calculated move to stay in the public eye.

“Akon used Wizkid to stay relevant, and continues to do so with interviews,” Regha stated bluntly.
“He didn’t contribute to the growth of Afrobeats or help the genre become what it is today.”
He further pushed back against any narrative suggesting that Akon played a role in boosting Wizkid’s career on the global stage.
According to Regha, Wizkid was already a major figure within the Nigerian music industry before any association with Akon.

“Was Wizkid a local act before they crossed paths? No, definitely not. He was already making serious waves across Nigeria,” he added.
Regha’s comments have sparked fresh debate online about the international contributions—or lack thereof—of foreign artists to the Afrobeats movement.
While some fans echoed his sentiments, others defended Akon, pointing to his early recognition of African talents and collaborations with several Nigerian artists.
The conversation adds to a growing discourse around ownership, recognition, and the true drivers of Afrobeats’ global success.
