Abia Leads the Pack as NECO Releases Results: 828,284 Pass English and Maths

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results for the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal candidates.

This announcement was made on Thursday, September 19, by NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Wushishi, at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. He revealed that 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exam, but only 1,367,736 eventually sat for it.

Out of those who took the exam, 828,284 candidates, representing 60.55 percent, achieved five credits, including both Mathematics and English Language. Professor Wushishi stated, “Of the total candidates who sat for the examination, 702,112 were males and 665,624 were females. Additionally, 1,147,597 candidates, representing 83.90 percent, obtained five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.”

Special Needs Candidates

The Registrar also highlighted the participation of 2,267 candidates with special needs in the examination. These special needs candidates included 1,104 with hearing impairments, 348 with visual impairments, 342 with albinism, 237 with autism, and 236 with low vision.

Malpractice Cases

A reduction in examination malpractice was reported, with 8,437 cases recorded in 2024 compared to 12,030 in 2023. This marks a 30.1 percent decrease in malpractice. However, 40 schools across 17 states were found guilty of mass cheating. One school in Ekiti State was recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.

In addition, 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for offenses such as poor supervision, aiding and abetting cheating, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence, occurring across 12 states.

Top and Least Performing States

Abia State emerged as the best-performing state, with 83.40 percent of candidates scoring five credits or more, including Mathematics and English. Additionally, 95.84 percent of candidates from Abia achieved five credits or more, irrespective of Mathematics and English.

On the other hand, Katsina State recorded the lowest performance, with only 42 percent of candidates achieving five credits or more, including Mathematics and English. Kano State followed closely behind, with 44.42 percent of candidates reaching the same threshold.

How to Check NECO 2024 Results

For those eager to check their results, NECO has provided the following steps:

  1. Visit the NECO Portal: Go to the official website at https://www.neco.gov.ng, which is the only secure platform for checking results.
  2. Select ‘NECO Results’: On the homepage, click the ‘NECO Results’ option to access the result-checking section. You can also directly visit the result portal at https://results.neco.gov.ng.
  3. Enter Your Examination Details: Provide the year of the exam (2024), the type (June/July or Nov/Dec), and your unique examination number.
  4. Input Your Token: Tokens can be purchased directly from the NECO website. Enter the token in the designated field.
  5. Check Your Results: Once all details are provided, click the ‘Check Results’ button. Your results will be displayed on the screen shortly.

  • NECO’s Official Website: This is the most secure and reliable option.
  • Authorized Retailers: Ensure that third-party retailers are approved by NECO to avoid scams.

Important Note: Each token allows only five attempts to check a candidate’s result. After exhausting these attempts, you’ll need to use the NECO E-Verify Result Verification Portal to verify or confirm your results.

Candidates are advised to use their tokens wisely to avoid unnecessary difficulties in accessing their results in the future.
