Akpabio accuse Natasha of disinformation, embarrassing Nigerian Senate

Date:

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, is facing accusations of misrepresenting the facts surrounding her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate, which was imposed for alleged violations of Senate rules.

During Thursday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan for “globalizing” her suspension, accusing her of presenting a distorted account of the situation.

The senator had recently spoken at the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York, where she publicly addressed her suspension.

In her statements, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that the disciplinary action was a form of victimization following her allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of office against Akpabio.

Responding to her allegations on Thursday, Akpabio stated, “I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalised the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative.

“I appreciate Hon Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that what was presented was completely different from the reality.

“She brought the matter before the Senate through a petition but did not allow us to examine it. Instead, she took it to court and later to the international community.

“Actions like these could discourage politicians from appointing women into key positions.”
