Alleged $150m fraud: Aisha Achimugu speaks

Prominent Abuja-based businesswoman and philanthropist, Aisha Achimugu, has publicly addressed her recent invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying her appearance before the anti-corruption body was motivated by her commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

Achimugu clarified that she voluntarily presented herself to the EFCC, affirming that as a responsible citizen, she views the process as a constructive contribution to the agency’s ongoing efforts in tackling financial crimes.

Describing herself as a firm believer in transparency and institutional integrity, she noted that her decision to comply with the EFCC’s request stemmed from her respect for legal processes

“I am a law-abiding citizen and advocate of transparency and accountability,” she said, adding that her cooperation is part of her support for the EFCC’s mandate.

The businesswoman was apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, upon her return from London on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

In a statement issued by her legal representatives, Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN) and Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), it was disclosed that Achimugu maintained open lines of communication with the Commission throughout her time abroad.

The statement explained: “In line with her respect for lawful institutions and her sense of civic duty, she communicated openly and consistently with the EFCC during her time abroad.

“She formally wrote to the Commission twice on 5th and 12th March, 2025, clearly stating her commitment to return and make herself available to assist in the ongoing investigation at the earliest time. Both letters outlined April 28th and 29th, as her confirmed return date.

“Upon landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 5:00 am, Mrs. Achimugu, without delay, proceeded directly to the EFCC headquarters, fulfilling her promise and demonstrating her respect for due process and the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption institutions.”

Achimugu also extended her appreciation to EFCC officials for the professionalism and patience displayed during the time she was overseas.

She commended the agency’s approach, describing it as a reflection of their commitment to justice and a demonstration of fairness and respect for the rights of Nigerian citizens.
