The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated legal proceedings against Andy Uba, a former senator representing Anambra South, over allegations of fraud.
Uba, along with Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu, faces a two-count charge filed under suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/538/2024. The charges, dated October 8, 2024, were submitted before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the first charge, Uba, Crystal, Etu, and another individual identified as Hajiya Fatima (currently at large), allegedly conspired in 2022 to deceive George Uboh. They purportedly claimed they could secure the appointment of a Managing Director for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in exchange for N400 million.
Uboh had lodged a petition with the IGP on April 5, 2023, providing what he described as documentary and voice recording evidence to substantiate his claims.
The prosecution plans to present six witnesses against Uba and the other defendants.
During a court session on November 13, prosecution counsel M.L. Anthony revealed that the defendants had been evading court documents despite being granted administrative bail. He explained that a fundamental rights enforcement order obtained by the defendants initially barred the police from arraigning them. However, once the order was lifted, the case proceeded.
Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter to February 18, 2025, for the arraignment of the defendants.
