A coalition of aviation workers’ unions has declared an indefinite suspension of services by personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), beginning Monday, August 11, 2025.
This action stems from unresolved issues surrounding delayed implementation of a revised salary structure.
The decision was made public through a joint statement issued on Thursday, August 7, and signed by leaders of four prominent aviation unions: the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
The strike notice follows a previous joint letter dated July 31, 2025, in which the unions gave a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, demanding action on the long-pending salary adjustments for NAMA employees.
Despite reaching an agreement with NAMA management more than eight months ago, the unions say no progress has been made in implementing the approved salary structure.
They warned that the delay not only undermines worker welfare but could severely disrupt the operations of the aviation sector if left unresolved.
In their latest statement, the unions reiterated their dissatisfaction with the ministry’s inaction and reminded stakeholders that the ultimatum was set to expire on Thursday, August 7, 2025. They emphasized that their call for strike action was not taken lightly but became necessary due to the government’s failure to act.
“As you are all aware, the notice of withdrawal of services given on 30th July, 2025, expires at the end of today,” the unions noted in their joint statement.
“Therefore, all workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday, 11th August, 2025 at 05hrs indefinitely.
“All airlines and allied companies, as well as the flying public, are hereby informed of the above-stated action and advised to make alternative travel arrangements,” the statement read.
The unions further instructed all their members within NAMA to fully comply with the directive, stressing that no communication will be acknowledged except those issued collectively by the national secretariats of the involved unions.
“All staff shall comply with this directive, and only joint communication from the national secretariats of the above-named unions shall be heeded with regard to further directives on this matter,” they declared.
The strike notice was signed by AbdulRasaq Saidu (Secretary General, ANAP), Odinakachukwu J. Igbokwe (Deputy General Secretary, NUATE), Frances Akinjole (Principal Deputy General Secretary, ATSSSAN), and Alo Lawrence O. (General Secretary, AUPCTRE).
Copies of the notice were sent to key aviation authorities, including Minister Keyamo, the Managing Directors of NAMA and FAAN, the Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, the Directors of State Security across all airports, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria.
The unions say the indefinite suspension of services will remain in place until the federal government fulfills its commitment to aviation workers and implements the long-delayed salary adjustment.
