Date:

In a historic move, the federal government has officially renamed the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

This change is a tribute to General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the nation, especially as he recently marked his 90th birthday.

Idris confirmed that the proposal will now be sent to the National Assembly for formal ratification.
