Bus Stop Renaming: That’s not our priority, let’s focus on electoral reform – Charly Boy

Date:

Veteran musician and activist Charles Oputa, famously known as Charly Boy, has expressed no concern over the removal of his name from a Lagos bus stop.

The controversial public figure responded to the development during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Briefing on Tuesday.

The bus stop, once informally referred to as “Charly Boy Bus Stop” by residents in appreciation of his activism, was recently renamed “Badoo Bus Stop” by Kolade Alabi, the outgoing Chairman of the Bariga Local Council Development Area.

Charly Boy, reacting to the move, said he has no emotional attachment to such gestures.

“It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who has done something meaningful for their community can take the shine. I’m indifferent. That’s not our priority right now,” he said.

He emphasized that public recognition through structures or symbols isn’t what defines legacy, reiterating that Nigerians should instead channel their energy towards more pressing national matters, especially electoral credibility.

“There are bigger things we should be concerned about—like making sure that come 2024, our votes count. That’s what the indicators are pointing to, and that’s what we should all be focused on,” he added.

The renaming has generated varying reactions from members of the public and online users. While some questioned the reasoning and transparency behind the decision, others pointed out that community references often evolve over time and reflect changing dynamics.
