Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has disclosed plans to reduce the numbers of temporary foreign workers in the country.

According to the PM, companies would have to prove reasons they can’t hire Canadian workers first before they’ll be allowed to hire foreigners.

Trudeau disclosed this in a terse statement he shared via his X handle on Wednesday, October 23.

He wrote: “We’re going to have fewer temporary foreign workers in Canada.

“We’re bringing in stricter rules for companies to prove why they can’t hire Canadian workers first.”

The change in policy follows significant population growth in Canada, largely fueled by high immigration rates that have started to exceed the pace of job creation.

This influx consists of international students, foreign workers addressing labor shortages, and individuals fleeing conflicts and natural disasters.

The new policy seeks to strike a balance between attracting skilled labor and safeguarding job opportunities for Canadians, as the nation navigates economic recovery and labor market challenges in the wake of the pandemic.
