EFCC officer killed, another injured in attack by suspected yahoo boys in Anambra

Date:

Suspected online scammers, referred to as “Yahoo boys,” opened fire on the anti-graft agents in Onitsha, Anambra State, killing one EFCC official and seriously wounding another.

Bystanders were in a state of fear after the horrific event on Friday, and some of them were hurt as they ran away.

The EFCC operatives, who had traveled from the agency’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were reportedly on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals when they were ambushed.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the operatives were confronted by gunfire as soon as the fraudsters became aware of their presence.

“One officer was killed instantly, while another was critically wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital,” the source disclosed, requesting anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

The injured officer remains in critical condition, with the latest reports indicating his survival is uncertain.

The deceased officer, identified as an assistant superintendent, had recently passed his promotional exam. His identity is being withheld pending formal notification of his family.

Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said investigations are underway.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and the weapon used in the attack has been recovered. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” Ikenga said.

The shooting has raised concerns about the increasing risks faced by law enforcement agencies in their efforts to combat cybercrime.
