The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning against electoral malpractice, particularly vote buying, during the ongoing local government elections in Lagos State.
As part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 were dispatched to conduct surveillance and monitoring activities at several key locations across the state.

This move is aimed at discouraging financial inducement and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
According to the Commission, the monitoring exercise reflects its commitment to bolstering public trust in the nation’s democratic institutions. Leading the operation was Michael Nzekwe, the Zonal Director and Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, who oversaw the strategic deployment of personnel.
Nzekwe visited multiple polling areas, including Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe Local Government Area, to ensure effective implementation of the Commission’s mandate.
According to The Nation, polling units monitored included Bonny Camp, Banana Island, Elegushi, Gbangbala Street, Olushi Kakawa, and locations along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
At each site, Nzekwe emphasized the EFCC’s directive of non-interference while maintaining vigilance against any forms of financial corruption. He ensured that deployed officers adhered strictly to the agency’s code of conduct during the exercise.
Security personnel stationed at the polling units acknowledged the EFCC’s support and highlighted the positive impact of the Commission’s presence in discouraging electoral misconduct.
They noted that such collaborative efforts are essential in eliminating vote trading, which has negatively influenced past elections.
The EFCC reaffirmed its broader mission to maintain ethical standards in public affairs and pledged continued support for credible, peaceful, and transparent elections across the country.
