Enugu constituents petition INEC, launch recall effort for Rep Martins Oke

Date:

Registered voters in the Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency have launched a recall process for their representative in the House of Representatives, Hon. Martins Oke, citing his failure to deliver on his promises as the main reason behind their action.

A formal petition, dated March 27, 2025, has been submitted to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The petition, signed by Mr. Ugwuagbo Emmanuel Chizoba, along with constituents Mr. Clinton Ogbonna, Mr. Sabinus Amah, and Mr. Stephen Okenwa, highlights widespread dissatisfaction with Oke’s performance.

The petitioners contend that the lawmaker’s inability to fulfill the needs and expectations of his constituents has led them to seek his removal, reflecting increasing frustration with his leadership.

“This is his 3rd term in the Federal House of Representatives. There’s no popular bill or motion to his name.

“There are no visible constituency projects to his name, and we don’t see or hear him during the NASS sittings. He contributes NOTHING to local , State or national discourse. He isn’t representing us at all”, they said.

The petitioners further claimed that Martins Oke was not genuinely elected by the constituents, asserting that his selection as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate was “imposed” against the will of the party.

They contended that Oke had “lost the general election by a wide margin,” but was declared the winner by the Appeal Court on technical grounds. “We want to reclaim the mandate that he took from us through the courts,” they added.

They accused the lawmaker of not having a constituency office “and is hardly seen in his constituency.

“He has never held a town hall meeting to interact with his constituents and remains completely disconnected from the people.

“We don’t see him at home, we don’t see him on TV and we still don’t see him on the seat during NASS Sessions.

“He has shown a lack of commitment to the welfare of his constituents, failing to address pressing issues affecting the people of Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency,” the constituents said.

The letter stated that, in compliance with constitutional requirements, the petition had been signed by no less than 50% of the registered voters in the constituency.
