Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), ex-Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been freed after spending 56 days in kidnappers den.
The retired general was abducted from his hometown in Bakori Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State on February 5, 2025, along with nine other residents.
After a ransom was reportedly paid by his family, Tsiga’s captors continued to hold him for several weeks, despite the transaction.
While initial reports suggested that N60 million was paid for his release, reliable sources have confirmed that the actual ransom was significantly higher—three times the reported amount.
A close family member shared with ‘Daily Trust’ that after the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers remained silent for an entire week.
It wasn’t until March 11 that the family heard from Tsiga, when the kidnappers placed him on the phone to speak with them.

“The money was delivered, and after a week of silence, they finally called on Tuesday, March 11, and we heard his voice,” the family source explained.
The kidnappers reportedly demanded more money, but the family declined to pay any additional ransom. The source further revealed that the captors are believed to be in Zamfara State, from where Tsiga is expected to be moved to Abuja.
A senior military official confirmed the release of Brigadier-General Tsiga, and sources close to the family have stated that he is in good health following his ordeal.
