FG hires foreign military experts to train soldiers in counterterrorism

Date:

In a significant move to strengthen its defense capabilities, the Nigerian government has enlisted top-tier foreign military experts to train its forces in specialized operations, with a focus on counterterrorism and hostage rescue missions.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, during the inauguration of a rigorous training program for 800 soldiers in Kaduna State.

Abubakar emphasised that this initiative is not just about skill-building, but also about arming troops with cutting-edge technology and advanced weaponry to enhance their effectiveness in tackling emerging security challenges.

The first phase of the training program will see 800 soldiers undergo intensive preparation, with an additional 800 slated for training in subsequent phases.

According to the minister, the decision to bring in foreign experts is critical to counteracting the constantly evolving tactics employed by terrorist organisations.

While Abubakar refrained from disclosing the exact countries contributing the military personnel, he revealed that the trainers come from seven different nations, bringing a wealth of global experience to the Nigerian forces.

“In the first phase alone, a total of 2,400 Nigerian soldiers will be equipped with these specialized skills before the program transitions to its second stage,” he noted.

The Minister also highlighted the positive impact of the government’s ongoing security initiatives, pointing to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State as a prime example where peace has been successfully restored thanks to enhanced military operations.
