The Federal Government has announced the release of funds to address the long-standing issue of withheld salaries for the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU).

This move is seen as a conciliatory effort to support university staff, many of whom have gone on strike over salary arrears.

The announcement was made by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), on Saturday.

In addition to settling salary arrears, the government has allocated funds for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS), highlighting its commitment to fulfilling pension obligations.

Mokwa confirmed that payments have already begun, with numerous NASU members reporting they have received their salaries.

This development is expected to relieve some of the financial burdens faced by university staff and contribute to stabilising the public university system.

“The Federal Government is dedicated to effectively addressing the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees,” the OAGF statement emphasised, underscoring ongoing efforts to ensure timely financial support for public sector employees and pensioners.

This initiative forms part of broader strategies to resolve financial grievances within Nigeria’s higher education sector and enhance the welfare of both current and retired personnel.
