FG Urges Nigerians to Move from Floodplains After Lagdo Dam Water Release

Date:

On Thursday, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), announced that water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has been released into the River Niger and River Benue in Nigeria’s North Central region.

NIHSA has issued an urgent warning for residents living in floodplains to relocate immediately to safer areas in preparation for potential flooding, which typically accompanies the release of water from the Lagdo Dam.

NIHSA Director General Umar Mohammed communicated this warning, noting that an agreement was reached with Cameroonian authorities to release the water from the Lagdo Dam in phases. This phased approach aims to manage the water volume and reduce the risk of flooding across 11 vulnerable states in Nigeria.

“The release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam began yesterday (Wednesday) and is being conducted intermittently to help mitigate flooding risks,” said Mohammed.

Earlier this week, the Federal Government alerted the public about the impending water release from the Lagdo Dam.

Flood-prone states identified by NIHSA include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.

Mohammed emphasized that while the situation is currently stable and being managed, rising water levels are a concern. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to prevent flooding, urging individuals to take personal responsibility. “Everyone has a role to play; as the Federal Government and our agency are taking steps, individuals must also act. Move away from floodplains, clean and clear drainages, and ensure waterways are unobstructed.”

A report has been submitted to the Presidency, highlighting the need for silt removal in some Nigerian dams.

This announcement follows recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, where water from the Alau Dam overflow caused the deaths of over 30 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Historical data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) indicates that flooding in 2022 resulted in 665 deaths, displaced over 2.4 million people, and affected nearly 4.5 million individuals. In 2023, flooding impacted 159,157 people, caused 28 deaths, and displaced 48,168 individuals. The release of water from the Lagdo Dam contributed to some of the recent floodings.
