Nigerian music icon David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed strong support for embattled social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), who was recently arrested under controversial circumstances.

Davido wrote: “Outside all the noise it’s good to see that the good one does actually impacts lives and Pple actually appreciate! The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging… makes one want to do more for the masses ❤️ FREE MY GUY.”

Davido, who has consistently used his platform to support civic engagement and humanitarian causes, underscored the importance of public recognition for good deeds, adding that the overwhelming support for VDM is a testament to the impact of speaking out for the marginalized.

Social media has since been flooded with hashtags such as #FreeVeryDarkMan and #JusticeForVDM, as fans, rights advocates, and other celebrities join the chorus calling for his release. Many have cited concerns over what they describe as attempts to silence critical voices in Nigeria’s digital space.

Breakingng.com had on Friday reported the arrest of VeryDarkMan, he was taken by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), shortly after he visited a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

His arrest generated significant uproar on social media, with many accusing the bank of aiding what they see as a deliberate effort to silence dissent.

Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer and VDM’s legal representative, stated that EFCC operatives apprehended the influencer within the bank premises in what he described as an orchestrated setup.

In a statement shared online, Adeyanju alleged that the influencer was held for several minutes inside the bank’s exit area, which he believes was done intentionally to facilitate the arrest.

“VDM was locked inside the GTB exit door for over 5 mins to enable EFCC arrest him and his friend,” Adeyanju said.

“We will be taking legal actions against GTB for the inhumane treatment meted out to our client. We will issue a public statement soon.”

He also confirmed that members of his legal team, led by Marvin Omorogbe, had found VDM and were engaging with EFCC officials in a bid to secure his release.

“Our lawyers led by the Head of our firm @Marvin_Omorogbe just met VDM’s friend who was arrested together with him in EFCC custody. VDM refused to come out of the cell; that he won’t see anyone,” Adeyanju said.“ We have located VDM and [are] working on getting him out. Our lawyers are now with him,” he added.
