National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside Governors Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, joined party members on Sunday to celebrate Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s election as governor of Ondo State.
Footage from the APC’s situation room captured Ganduje, Sanwo-Olu, Uzodimma, and other party leaders congratulating Aiyedatiwa, who achieved a sweeping victory by winning in all 18 local government areas of the state.
Prof. Akinwunmi, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja, Kogi State, announced the results and declared Aiyedatiwa elected at exactly 2:29 p.m on Sunday.
According to the official results, Aiyedatiwa secured 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes. Adeyemi Nejo of the African Democratic Party (ADP) came third with 4,138 votes.
Prof. Akinwunmi said that “Aiyedatiwa Lucky Orimisan of the APC, having satisfied all the requirements of law and scored majority of the lawful votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
The election was marked by a low voter turnout and incidents of vote-buying but was largely peaceful across the state.
Aiyedatiwa, who had served as the deputy governor to the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu until December 2023, now begins a four-year term as Ondo State governor.
