Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo with immediate effect, pending an investigation into multiple petitions filed against her.
The suspension was announced in a statement from the Office of the President on Tuesday.
It followed consultations with the Council of State, which advised that a prima facie case had been established, prompting the formation of a special committee to examine the allegations.
While the statement did not detail the contents of the petitions, it confirmed that the inquiry would proceed under constitutional provisions governing judicial accountability.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, the third woman to hold the position in Ghana’s history, was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo and assumed office in June 2023.
She previously survived a removal attempt earlier this year when President Akufo-Addo dismissed a petition against her, citing procedural flaws.
