A prominent civil society organization, the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has called for an an independent investigation into serious allegations against members of the Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
The appeal comes in light of disturbing claims made by a businessman, Mr. Olu Agwu, who has accused police officers of kidnapping, extortion, and abuse of power.
Agwu, who was reportedly abducted in Abia State, recounted a harrowing ordeal in which he was blindfolded, transported to Enugu, and detained by the state’s anti-kidnapping unit.
During his detention, Agwu alleges he was subjected to intense threats and falsely accused of having ties to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The businessman claims he was coerced into paying an exorbitant sum of N62 million for his release, with reports suggesting that part of the money was funneled to high-ranking police officials, including the chairman of the Police Service Commission.
In response to these allegations, RULAAC has called on the Police Service Commission to launch an immediate and thorough investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability in the wake of the shocking claims.
