Hamas has released three hostages, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas following the unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023.
The hostages were freed as part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by mediators between the warring factions.
Israel confirmed the reception of the hostages on Sunday evening, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stating that the trio—Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari—had arrived at a southern Israeli reception point.
There, they were to be reunited with their families.
“IDF officers, alongside medical personnel, are overseeing the hostages’ initial medical assessment,” the IDF said in a statement.
“Family members are being supported and kept informed at the hospital.”
The release of these three hostages sparked celebrations in Tel Aviv, where crowds gathered to celebrate their safe return.
Their release is the first of 33 hostages that are expected to be freed over the next six weeks. In exchange, 90 Palestinian prisoners and detainees are set to be released from Israeli custody.
Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement and the schedule for the release of hostages, contingent upon Israel’s adherence to the terms of the deal.
