INEC set for Saturday’s bye-elections as campaign ends

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that campaigns for Saturday’s bye-elections across 12 states will officially close by midnight, Thursday, August 14, 2025.

In a statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC said sensitive materials would be deployed to the states today, with non-sensitive materials already in place.

The elections will take place in 16 constituencies, including two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies across Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, and nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.

Olumekun stated, “As Nigerians are aware, these bye-elections were caused by the resignation or death of serving members of the national and State Houses of Assembly. Similarly, the court-ordered re-run election in Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Anambra State and the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State will be held simultaneously with the bye-elections.

“All non-sensitive materials for the election have been delivered to the States. Election technology, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS has been configured for the election. The recruitment and training of ad hoc staff as well as security and logistics arrangements, have been concluded. The final consignment of sensitive materials will be delivered today as scheduled.

“The Commission wishes to remind political parties and candidates that campaigns end at midnight today, Thursday 14th August 2025.”

With less than two days to the polls, INEC appealed to political actors, voters, party agents, observers, and the media to strictly adhere to electoral laws and guidelines.

The commission also announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume on Monday, August 18, 2025, with online pre-registration, while physical registration will commence on August 25, 2025, at its 811 state and local government offices nationwide.

During the CVR, Nigerians who are 18 years or older and have never registered will be eligible, and provisions will be made for PVC replacement and transfer of registration.

INEC warned that multiple registration remains a criminal offence.

Olumekun further disclosed that following the close of candidate nominations for the FCT Area Council election, 17 political parties submitted names of 637 candidates for 68 positions.

The list of candidates and their credentials will be published on August 18, 2025, in line with the Electoral Act. The final list will be released on September 22, 2025, ahead of the February 21, 2026, election.
