Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday in memory of the 22 athletes and officials who tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident.
The accident occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway as the delegation was returning to the state after participating in the recently concluded National Sports Festival.

In a condolence message conveyed through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor conveyed his profound sadness over the incident and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that occurred to the brave Kano team members on their way back home,” the statement read.
The victims were part of a delegation consisting of athletes, their coaches, and support staff who proudly represented Kano at the festival.
“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief,” the governor said.
Describing the event as a sorrowful moment in the state’s history, Governor Yusuf called on the people of Kano to come together in mourning and support for the families affected by the loss.
He further assured that the state government would extend full support, including medical care and financial assistance, to the injured and the relatives of the deceased.
Though currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, the governor directed that June 2 be observed as a public holiday to allow residents the opportunity to reflect, pray, and offer their solidarity.
In addition, the Kano State Government appealed to Muslim clerics within the state and across Nigeria to dedicate prayers to the departed and their grieving families during Friday and Monday congregations.
