Kano gov orders probe into commissioner’s alleged role in drug baron’s bail

Date:

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged involvement of his Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, in the controversial bail of suspected drug baron Sulaiman Wawu.

The governor’s decision follows widespread outrage sparked by reports that Namadi’s name appeared in official documents allegedly used to secure Wawu’s release.

In a statement released on Saturday, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the governor’s spokesman, emphasized that the administration “will not tolerate any attempt to shield individuals suspected of sabotaging the fight against drug-related crimes.”

He affirmed that the Kano State government is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.

To ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, Governor Yusuf has established a special investigative committee. This committee is tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommending appropriate measures.

Aminu Hussain, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, will chair the committee. Other members include Hamza Haladu, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, Maj. Gen. Sani Muhammad (retd.), Kabiru Said Dakata, and Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota. The committee is expected to submit its findings “with immediate effect.”

During the unveiling of the committee, Governor Yusuf expressed concern over the potential abuse of public office by political appointees.

He reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and related social vices.

“Let it be known that our administration will not condone any act that compromises the safety and wellbeing of our citizens,” the statement added.

“We are fully committed to the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse, and anyone found culpable—regardless of their position—will face the full weight of the law.”

Sulaiman Wawu, the alleged drug baron at the center of the controversy, was reportedly arrested on narcotics trafficking charges.
