Kwara State Government has initiated an investigation into the alleged assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member by teachers at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, in the Ilorin East Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that the female corps member, whose name has been withheld, was assaulted on Thursday for allegedly failing to greet the teachers properly.
Eyewitness accounts claim the incident escalated when one teacher tore her NYSC white T-shirt and another slapped her. The corps member was reportedly at the school to collect her clearance letter.
The incident has sparked public outrage, raising concerns about professionalism, respect, and the abuse of power within educational institutions.
The NYSC’s Head of Information and Public Relations in Kwara State, Morakinyo Oladipo, confirmed the incident, stating that steps are being taken to ensure justice for the corps member. He noted that the state government, through the Ministry of Youth, had been informed and had taken immediate action. Additionally, the corps member will be reposted to another location to help her recover from the trauma.
“It’s a fact. The story is true, and all necessary steps have been taken to seek redress for the assaulted corps member,” Oladipo said.
Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, condemned the act, calling it unacceptable.
In a statement by the ministry’s press secretary, Peter Amogbonjaye, Modibbo-Kawu emphasised that the state prides itself on peace and harmony, which must be maintained in all academic institutions.
“The Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry and the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission have paid an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the alleged assault case and calm has been restored,” the commissioner said.
She assured the public that disciplinary action would be taken against the implicated teacher, identified as Amuzat Nike, and urged the NYSC and all stakeholders to remain patient and law-abiding as the matter is resolved.
