Lagos Assembly: GAC holds crucial meeting over Obasa’s removal

Date:

The Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will convene today (Monday) for an urgent meeting to tackle the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Scheduled to take place at the Lagos House Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the meeting aims to address the fallout from the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

As the APC’s highest decision-making body in Lagos, GAC, led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi and with President Bola Tinubu as its lifetime patron, wields significant influence.

The council’s decisions are binding on all members, making today’s meeting a critical step in resolving the impasse.

This will be the second such meeting in just two weeks, after GAC previously convened at the same venue to discuss the developments at the State House of Assembly. The timing is significant, as Governor Sanwo-Olu is also expected to chair the weekly Executive Council meeting, which will likely include discussions on the ongoing legislative crisis and seek an amicable resolution.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 members of the House removed Obasa in absentia, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, misconduct, and autocratic behavior. He was replaced by his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, sparking a wave of mixed reactions from GAC members, party loyalists, and the general public.

In the aftermath, divisions have deepened within the GAC. Some members have criticized the process behind Obasa’s removal, with Muraina Taiwo, representing Isolo Constituency, specifically condemning the reconvening of the House during its recess to oust the former Speaker.

GAC members Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye have also expressed opposing views on the matter. Adefuye contended that Obasa’s removal was illegal, while Obanikoro dismissed this assertion as “careless.”

Despite these differing opinions, GAC Secretary Mutiu Are described the crisis as a “family affair” and reiterated that the dispute would be resolved internally, through dialogue and consensus.

With tensions still simmering, GAC is working towards a peaceful resolution of the controversy surrounding Obasa’s removal and its impact on the APC’s unity in Lagos.
