Lagos lawmakers impeach Obasa as Speaker

Mudasiru Obasa has been impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The impeachment occurred during Monday’s plenary session.

Following his impeachment, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker under Obasa, was elected as the new Speaker.

Meranda, representing Apapa I, assumes leadership of the Assembly after the dramatic shift in power.

This move follows serious allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement surrounding the former Speaker.

Reports indicate that the Speaker was impeached due to gross misconduct and abuse of power.

Among the accusations is the controversial spending of N17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex, which critics have labeled as extravagant and fraudulent.

Additional claims have surfaced regarding the mismanagement of constituency funds and projects under his leadership.
