2027: it is time to give our Muslim brothers chance to govern Lagos – Archbishop

The Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Lagos, Most Rev. Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, has advocated for the election of a Muslim governor in Lagos State by 2027, emphasising the importance of religious balance in the state’s leadership.

He pointed out that by that time, Christians will have held the governorship for a consecutive 12 years, with both Akinwunmi Ambode and Babajide Sanwo-Olu completing their terms. Ambode, a Christian, served only one term from 2015 to 2019, while Sanwo-Olu, also a Christian, will have completed his second and final term in office.

The Archbishop made this call during the 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos House of Assembly, under the theme ‘The Voice of Mercy,’ stressing the need for greater religious tolerance in the state.

According to a statement by Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Most Rev. Olawuyi suggested that it is now time for a Muslim leader to take the reins, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious governance.

The Archbishop stated, “It would be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together, and we have had Christians as governors. Now, it’s time to give our Muslim brothers a chance to govern us in Lagos State.”

Recall that Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, between years 1999 to 2015 served as governors of Lagos State.
