Malami slams APC over Tinubu’s 2027 endorsement

Date:

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has criticised top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for prioritising President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid over addressing pressing national issues.

Speaking at a meeting convened by the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja on Sunday, Malami said the ruling party’s recent focus on endorsing Tinubu for a second term reflects misplaced priorities amid deepening national challenges.

The event, which brought together opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, was part of ongoing efforts to build a broad political coalition ahead of 2027.

In his keynote address, Malami accused the Tinubu administration of implementing policies that have worsened economic conditions, particularly in the northern region.

He lamented that instead of tackling issues like insecurity, poverty, and economic hardship, the APC leadership is fixated on early endorsements.

“Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and, rather than confront the pressing concerns affecting Nigerians, it focused on politics declaring President Tinubu as the sole candidate for 2027,” Malami was quoted as saying.

Malami, who served as AGF from 2015 to 2023 under the Buhari administration, called for a united political front in the North to reclaim the country and build a more stable and inclusive future.

His remarks follow recent discontent among members of the APC’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) faction.

The group, which includes former SGF Babachir Lawal, has voiced concerns over the party’s direction and is reportedly working on a new political platform to represent northern interests.

A communiqué from Sunday’s meeting stated that participants agreed on the need for the North to consolidate and define a political vehicle that would protect and promote its interests in future elections.
