NAFDAC slams VeryDarkMan over anti-regulatory comments

Date:

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a firm stance against social media influencer, VeryDarkMan (VDM), condemning his recent remarks which the agency believes promote resistance to federal oversight.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC expressed concern over the influencer’s viral video, which it claims distorts the agency’s operations at the Onitsha Bridge Head Market and potentially contravenes provisions of the Cybercrime Act.

“What this perpetrator has done is that he has openly told his audience to defy the regulatory processes of NAFDAC following the enforcement operation carried out under the Office of the National Security Adviser,” the statement read.

NAFDAC shed light on its recent enforcement exercises in major open drug markets, including those in Idumota, Aba, and Onitsha. The agency revealed that the operations led to the discovery of prohibited, counterfeit, and expired narcotic substances valued at over one trillion naira.

The agency emphasized that the facilities raided—including warehouses, shops, and storage areas—failed to comply with the basic standards required for proper storage and distribution of pharmaceutical products.

Professor Adeyeye noted further: “The remaining few shops whose owners have refused to come forward for identification are the ones with outrightly banned narcotics according to our database. The cartel, along with their co-conspirators, are the ones creating incitements.

”Reaffirming its mission, the agency highlighted its commitment to ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines and other regulated products within the Nigerian market.

“NAFDAC will continue to safeguard the health of the nation. Our duty is to reduce the incidence of untimely deaths caused by fake or substandard medicines,” the DG noted.

While NAFDAC disclosed that the matter has been left to security authorities to determine whether the influencer’s conduct breached any laws, it issued a stern warning that any behavior that encourages civil disobedience or challenges the agency’s authority will not be taken lightly.
