NDLEA cracks down on drug cartels in Lagos, Edo, others

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its operations across the country, leading to several high-profile arrests, large seizures, and the destruction of drug farms.

In Delta State, operatives arrested a wanted drug trafficker, 36-year-old Sunday Ibigide, who had been evading capture for more than three years.

He was apprehended while trying to deliver 250 blocks of cannabis, weighing 138 kilograms, using a distribution vehicle. NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that Ibigide had been on the agency’s watchlist since March 2022, when he was linked to a case involving over 24kg of cannabis and 10 grams of molly.

He was eventually caught on August 10, 2025, alongside an accomplice, 27-year-old Clement Osuya.In Enugu State, a combined team of NDLEA officers, soldiers, and community vigilantes dismantled three cannabis farms in Enugu Ezike.

The raid led to the destruction of 15 hectares containing 37,500kg of cannabis and the arrest of six suspects. Officers also recovered 74.5kg of harvested cannabis for prosecution.

On August 16, NDLEA patrols further intercepted 20,700 pills of tramadol and cocodamol from a suspect, 53-year-old Emmanuel Ayogu, while two others were arrested with 27.6kg of cannabis at New Market.

Lagos operations uncovered several major traffickers. On August 13, officers arrested a mother-and-son duo, 52-year-old Muyibat Mumuni and her 25-year-old son, Faruk, with 149kg of “Ghana Loud” cannabis in Mushin.

Another trafficker, Emmanuel Samuel, was caught in Ajah, Lekki, with 8.5kg of Canadian Loud.At Onne Port in Rivers State, NDLEA recorded one of its largest seizures this year during a joint inspection with Customs and other agencies.

Authorities recovered 875,000 bottles of codeine syrup, worth more than ₦6.1 billion, alongside 3.5 million tablets of tramadol and benzhexol, valued at about ₦1.7 billion.

Other states also witnessed significant arrests and seizures:

Edo: 432kg of cannabis seized on Warake–Auchi Road, plus 130kg recovered in Sobe, Owan West.

Kano: Two suspects, Tahiru Manga (25) and Ibrahim Audu (47), arrested with 92kg of cannabis on Zaria–Kano Road.

Gombe: 128,000 tramadol capsules seized from Sani Mohammed (32) on August 11.

Kogi: 337,800 tramadol capsules intercepted from a commercial bus driven by Sulaiman Oyedokun (47).

Taraba: 11,250kg of cannabis destroyed in Tanmiya forest, with 29,840 tramadol capsules recovered in Wukari.

Kaduna: Four suspects caught with 22,640 pills of tramadol/rohypnol and 111.1kg of cannabis.

Lagos–Badagry Expressway: 4,320 ampoules of ketamine injection seized on August 11, leading to the arrest of Akeem Adegun.

Meanwhile, the agency has been expanding its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative by engaging traditional and religious leaders, including former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Emir of Borgu, the Emir of Lafia, and the Shehu of Borno.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended operatives across Delta, Rivers, Enugu, Lagos, Kogi, Kano, Edo, Gombe, Taraba, Kaduna, and Seme for their dedication.

He encouraged them to maintain their momentum and continue upholding the agency’s balanced approach to tackling drug abuse and trafficking.
