Nigerian kills Spanish wife who was denied restraining order

Date:

A 48-year-old Spanish woman, Catalina, was tragically killed by her estranged Nigerian husband, Augustine, in Spain. This is coming after she had been denied a restraining order due to her case being classified as ‘medium risk’.

After a violent episode on January 20, Catalina reported Augustine for threatening her, but the Police didn’t grant her stronger precautionary measures.

She was registered in the VioGen system, which assesses domestic violence risk, but her case was still deemed “medium risk”.

The court also denied her a restraining order due to contradictions in her statement. Sadly, this decision had devastating consequences. Augustine allegedly killed Catalina and set their family home on fire with her body inside.

Catalina’s death has sparked outrage, with Loles López, Regional Minister for Social Inclusion, condemning the act.

The authorities have activated resources to care for Catalina’s four children, who were inside the house during the crime.

Catalina is the first victim of a gender-based murder in Andalucía and second in Spain in 2025.
