The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has sounded the alarm over potential severe flooding across 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between July 22 and August 5.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Umar Mohammad, Director-General of NIHSA, said the warning is based on the agency’s most recent hydrological forecasts, which are in line with projections made in its 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) published in April.

According to Mohammad, the updated forecast anticipates flooding in more than 739 communities within 162 local government areas (LGAs).
The states flagged for likely impact include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
Mohammad expressed concern that urban centres such as Lagos and Abuja are not exempt from potential devastation. He identified more than 100 major transportation corridors as vulnerable to flood-related disruptions, listing key routes such as the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Road, Birnin Kebbi-Bunza Road, and Ibi-Wukari Road as areas of concern.
“There is also an increased risk of property damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the statement reads.
He also cautioned that significant stretches of farmland could be submerged, a development that may negatively affect food production and intensify food insecurity across the country.
In response, Mohammad urged relevant emergency agencies and state authorities to fully activate their disaster preparedness and mitigation plans. He also appealed to residents in flood-prone zones to be ready to evacuate if necessary.
To stay informed and receive real-time updates, NIHSA advised the public to follow its flood monitoring dashboard at www.nihsa.gov.ng and monitor the agency’s social media handles for alerts and safety information.
