Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has revealed that both he and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo previously held the view that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) was incapable of achieving anything beneficial.
Okupe admitted to his earlier doubts regarding NNPCL’s potential for meaningful progress.
In a statement issued to celebrate Mele Kyari, the Group CEO of NNPCL, on his 60th birthday, Okupe expressed regret for his past criticisms.

He acknowledged his previous skepticism and noted that he, alongside many others, had once been vocal critics of NNPCL’s leadership.
“I write today with a profound sense of respect and admiration for Mr. Mele Kyari’s outstanding accomplishments as the CEO of NNPCL, especially as he celebrates this milestone,” Okupe stated.
He continued, recalling that, like Obasanjo, he had once believed NNPCL could not deliver any positive results, and he had even ridiculed the very concept of the organization’s creation.
