OPC leader warns Asari-Dokubo over “betrayers” comment towards Yorubas

Date:

Chief Dare Adesope, leader of the reformed Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), has condemned former Niger Delta militant leader Mujahid Asari-Dokubo for labeling the Yoruba as “betrayers” and vowing to ally with the North against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Adesope, in a statement issued Tuesday in Lagos, urged Asari-Dokubo to refrain from making divisive remarks, warning that such comments could harm the longstanding relationship between the Yoruba and Ijaw communities.

He stressed that Asari-Dokubo was speaking only for himself and not the Ijaw people, describing his outburst as unworthy of serious attention.

The OPC leader also alleged that Asari-Dokubo owes much of his current status to President Tinubu’s past support. He cited a 2023 interview in which Asari-Dokubo reportedly admitted that Tinubu bought him a car after his release from prison, paid his children’s school fees, supported his family, and even provided housing for his wife.

According to Adesope, Asari-Dokubo is a “selfish two faced character.”

He noted that after a visit to President Bola Tinubu two years ago, Asari-Dokubo “promised to do all in his power to stop oil theft in the Niger Delta region thinking the pipeline contract would be given to him.”

Adesope asserted that Asari-Dokubo’s current grievances stem from the fact that his “brother Tompolo is the one benefiting the pipeline surveillance contract,” leading him to insult Tinubu.

Adesope concluded with a strong admonition: “Asari cannot point to any of his followers he has empowered because he is a self-centered leader, let him mind his choice of words where Yoruba people are concerned or else we will restrict his movement in Yorubaland.”

He also drew a parallel, stating, “This is how he pushed Fubara bragging that if Wike removed him something would happen, but nothing happened except the state of emergency and he has not done anything since then. So, the Ijaw Nation I know can never descend so low to the point of requiring Asari Dokubo to lead it because his utterances are immature and unstable.”
