Over 31,000 PVCs unclaimed as Anambra gears up for voter registration

Date:

As the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise approaches in preparation for the Anambra State governorship election, an estimated 31,690 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) remain uncollected, as reported by The PUNCH.

This figure stems from data issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2023, which showed that 2,624,764 PVCs had been distributed across the state at that time.

The CVR is a standard process conducted by INEC to allow eligible Nigerians who have not previously registered to get on the electoral roll. It also provides an opportunity for those already registered to update their records or relocate their registration to a new polling unit if necessary.

This exercise is anticipated to boost the number of registered voters in Anambra, where the total currently stands at 2,656,437.

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, recently stated that preparations for the voter registration process were nearing completion in advance of the gubernatorial election set for November 8, 2025.

“We are aware of the urgency to commence the CVR, particularly given the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State,” Yakubu said.

“We want to assure Nigerians that we are finalising our preparations for both activities, the details of which will soon be made public.”

Given the backlog of unclaimed PVCs and the anticipated influx of new registrants, the number of eligible voters is likely to increase significantly ahead of the polls.

In a related development, INEC on Wednesday published the final list of candidates contesting in the election and declared the start of official campaign activities.

A statement from Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, confirmed that this development followed the successful conclusion of candidate substitution processes and verification of details submitted by political parties.

According to the commission, sixteen parties met the submission deadline of May 12, 2025, and are cleared to participate in the election scheduled for November 8.
