PDP NEC approves national convention, vows legal action against defectors

Date:

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the schedule and timetable for its 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled to take place from Saturday, November 15 to Sunday, November 16, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

This was one of the key resolutions reached during the party’s 101st NEC meeting held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in Abuja, where leaders of the PDP convened to deliberate on the state of the party and map out its political direction ahead of 2027.

In a communique issued, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, announced that the NEC had mandated the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the convention’s date, venue, and agenda.

This directive aligns with Section 82 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the relevant guidelines for political parties.

“The Elective National Convention to elect the next set of National Officers of our Party will hold on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November, 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital,” Ologunagba stated.

He further disclosed that the NEC had approved the membership composition of both the National Convention Committee and the National Convention Zoning Committee to ensure a “successful, transparent, and credible Elective National Convention.”

NEC also used the platform to reassure party members and the Nigerian public of its internal stability and renewed commitment to playing its role as the country’s leading opposition party.

“NEC expressed satisfaction over the resolution of all contentions and disagreements within the Party which again demonstrates the engrained patriotic disposition of PDP members and our Party’s democratic principles of dialogue, mutual understanding and commitment to the overall interest of the PDP and the common good of all Nigerians,” Ologunagba said.

Amid growing concerns over defections, the NEC directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to initiate immediate legal proceedings to reclaim seats held by elected PDP lawmakers who have switched allegiance to other political parties.

The party cited constitutional provisions as the basis for this action.

“By virtue of the self-executory provision of Sections 68 (1) (g) and 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), such defectors have irredeemably lost their seats, there being no division or merger with regard to the PDP,” Ologunagba emphasized.

The party’s leadership expressed concern over reports of some members allegedly participating in meetings and activities of rival political platforms. It warned such individuals to reconsider their affiliations and reaffirm loyalty to the PDP.

“NEC calls on these members to reconsider their actions and show loyalty and commitment as members of the PDP especially as the law does not permit membership of two political parties at the same time,” the party warned, while also assuring such members that internal grievances are being addressed.

In a show of openness, the NEC reiterated that the PDP remains a welcoming platform for collaborations with like-minded individuals and groups dedicated to rescuing the country from what it termed the “stranglehold of the rudderless and insensitive APC administration.”

“NEC reassures of PDP’s belief in democracy, and its commitment and readiness to be at the forefront in driving the aspiration of Nigerians to oust the APC and install a people-oriented government on the platform of the PDP come 2027,” Ologunagba concluded.

The NEC also fixed its next (102nd) meeting for Monday, August 25, 2025.
