PDP raises alarm over assassination attempt on Anambra guber candidate Jude Ezenwafor

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it described as a “brazen assassination attempt” on its Anambra State governorship candidate, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, ahead of the November 8, 2025, election.

According to the party, Ezenwafor narrowly escaped death when armed men ambushed and opened fire on him in Abuja on his way back from an appointment.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, the party expressed grave concern over the incident and linked it to political desperation stemming from Ezenwafor’s rising profile in the state.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemns in the strongest terms the attempt on the life of its candidate in the November 8, 2025 Governorship election in Anambra State, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, by gunmen who reportedly ambushed and opened fire on him in Abuja while he was returning from an appointment,” Ologunagba said.

The PDP alleges that political opponents, rattled by Ezenwafor’s growing popularity, are orchestrating schemes to prevent him from participating in the gubernatorial contest.

“After a critical analysis of the violent incident, the PDP believes that certain interests who, ostensibly being uncomfortable with the growing popularity of the PDP candidate ahead of the November election, are desperate to prevent him from participating in the coming poll,” the statement continued.

The party further claimed to have uncovered additional plots, including a planned wave of smear campaigns aimed at tarnishing Ezenwafor’s image following the failed assassination attempt.

“Our Party has also been made aware of other plots by some anti-democratic elements in Anambra State to commence series of smear campaigns against our candidate following the failure of the assassination plot,” Ologunagba added.

Describing the attack as reflective of Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, the PDP lamented the country’s current state of lawlessness and insecurity.

“This attack on the PDP candidate is another sad commentary on the alarming level of insecurity in the country under the overtly insensitive, corrupt and abysmally rudderless All Progressives Congress (APC) administration,” the statement read.

Ologunagba warned the perpetrators and their sponsors that their efforts would ultimately be in vain, stressing that Ezenwafor remains a candidate favored by both divine will and popular support.

“In any event, our clear message to the assailants and their sponsors is that they have and will continue to fail in their evil machination as the PDP candidate is divinely destined. Our candidate enjoys the support of the people and will surely emerge victorious in the election.”

The PDP also called on the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly by arresting those responsible for the attack and ensuring the safety of its candidate moving forward.”Our Party charges the Inspector General of Police to immediately apprehend the assailants and their sponsors while also beefing up security around the PDP candidate ahead of the election,” Ologunagba demanded.

Despite the life-threatening attack, the PDP urged Ezenwafor to remain resolute and undeterred, affirming its confidence in both his candidacy and the people’s commitment to change.

“The PDP family urges Chief Ezenwafor not to be dispirited by the attack. The fact remains that Anambra State is home to the PDP and no amount of attack, smear campaign or propaganda will sway the resolve of our Party, candidate and the people of Anambra State to elect a transparent, humane, people-oriented and result-driven administration on the platform of the PDP.”

As the November governorship election in Anambra approaches, the incident has sparked heightened political tensions and raised serious concerns over candidates’ safety and the integrity of the electoral process.
