PenCom urges FG to increase police pension contribution to 20%

Date:

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has called on the Federal Government to “increase its pension contribution for police officers from 10 to 20 per cent” and to boost their monthly pensions to 75% of their final salary before retirement.

This appeal was made by PenCom’s Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, during a visit to Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

The visit follows protests from retired police officers who have complained about poor welfare and demanded to be removed from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Among the proposed reforms, PenCom is suggesting a health insurance plan for retirees, increasing monthly pensions to 75% of a police officer’s final salary, expanding the Retirement Resettlement Fund, and a complete overhaul of the police pension system.

In a statement, PenCom noted that Oloworaran also “urged the Federal Government to raise its pension contribution for police officers from 10 to 20 per cent, which would substantially boost retirement savings.”

Regarding the calls for the police to leave the CPS, Oloworaran stated that doing so is “unnecessary and counterproductive,” adding that the issues can be resolved from within the scheme. S

he asked for patience as PenCom and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) work to implement these changes.

In response, Inspector-General Egbetokun praised PenCom’s efforts and confirmed the Police Force’s willingness to work with the commission to resolve the pension issues.

He acknowledged the challenges raised by police officers and expressed his commitment to finding a constructive solution.

PenCom also announced that it is collaborating with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation on a new gratuity plan set to begin in 2026.

The new plan will provide treasury-funded federal workers with a gratuity equal to one year of their total emoluments upon retirement.

This is a result of a recent meeting between Ms. Oloworaran and the Head of Service, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, aimed at ensuring federal employees have a strong financial safety net in retirement.

Earlier this month, President Bola Tinubu directed PenCom to address the long-standing police pension issue, emphasizing that those who serve and protect the country should be able to retire with peace of mind and dignity.
