Police fire tear gas at Abuja demonstrators

Date:

Tensions erupted in the Maitama area of Abuja on Monday when police operatives dispersed protesters using tear gas.

The protesters, who assembled peacefully to voice their concerns, were sent into disarray as the tear gas canisters caused chaos, prompting many to flee the area in panic.

The demonstration, part of a larger nationwide protest led by the Take-It-Back Movement and supported by civil society organisations, began earlier in the day.

It was allegedly organised to highlight a range of national issues, including the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic conditions in the country, and what the protesters described as a “state of emergency” in Rivers State.

As the protest unfolded, the police’s intervention escalated tensions with demonstrators struggling to continue their rally amid the harsh dispersal tactics.
