In a major operation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has eliminated five suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State, as confirmed in an official statement on Sunday.
The raid, part of the ongoing offensive against the group, was executed in collaboration with other security agencies.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the NPF spokesperson, stated that the operation targeted a key ESN camp, yielding significant results for the security forces.
Among the casualties were two senior ESN leaders, believed to be central figures in the group’s operations.
In addition, a large weapons cache was recovered, including seven AK-47 rifles, thirteen pump-action shotguns, and a considerable amount of ammunition, which is expected to severely hinder the group’s ability to operate.
This operation marks another major success in the continued efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
“As a follow up, on February 9 2025, the operatives moved to the Nkwukwo Forest in Mbaitoli LGA, at the boundary with Ubachima Forest in Awomama Oru West LGA, Imo State, where the team intercepted a group of terrorists who opened fire upon sighting the police,” the statement said.

“These operations not only reflect the commitment of the Force to maintaining law and order but also show the determination to dismantle criminal networks that threaten the safety of citizens.”
The spokesperson for the force shared that Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, commended the courage of the operatives involved and underscored the importance of maintaining ongoing vigilance in the fight against crime.
The IGP further highlighted the critical role of improved intelligence gathering, greater community engagement, and the prompt reporting of suspicious activities to safeguard public security.
