Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line on Sunday, marking a significant expansion of the city’s public transportation infrastructure.
The new trains, unveiled at the National Theatre Station, represent a major milestone for Lagos’s growing rail network.

“Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line,” Governor Sanwo-Olu announced during the ceremony.

The capacity expansion is expected to transform the daily commute for thousands of Lagos residents. “This will directly improve the commute for thousands of Lagosians, reducing wait times, speeding up journeys, and making the system more reliable overall,” the governor explained, adding that the state aims to achieve train arrivals “every 10 minutes.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the crucial role of federal support in making the expansion possible. “I’m deeply grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their strong support. From procurement to delivery, their backing made this possible,” he stated.
The Blue Line expansion is just the beginning of Lagos’s ambitious rail development program. The governor revealed that more substantial improvements are on the horizon, with new Red Line trains expected before year-end.
“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line which will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains,” Sanwo-Olu announced. He also confirmed that “construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) is also progressing.”

The governor described the rail expansion as part of a broader transformation of Lagos’s transportation landscape. “We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started,” he concluded.
The Lagos Rail Mass Transit system has been positioned as a key solution to the city’s notorious traffic congestion, with the Blue Line serving as a crucial link connecting various parts of the sprawling metropolis. The doubling of capacity comes as passenger demand continues to grow since the line’s operational launch.
The new trains represent a significant investment in public transportation infrastructure for Africa’s largest city, where millions of residents rely on various forms of mass transit for their daily commutes.
