Sen Imasuen to leave LP for APC, cites party crisis, strategic alignment

Date:

Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South and chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, has announced plans to leave the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Imasuen, elected under the LP platform, is expected to make his defection official on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The announcement came on Sunday in Benin during a media briefing to mark his second anniversary in the Senate.

He cited ongoing internal crises within the Labour Party as the key reason for his departure, saying the situation has made it difficult to deliver on his legislative mandate effectively.

Describing the move as strategic, Imasuen said joining the APC would allow him to better align Edo South with the federal government’s development agenda under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope programme.

He also outlined key milestones from his time in office, including the creation of the Federal College of Education, sponsorship of the Abudu Bill, and the successful resolution of more than 20 public petitions.

Imasuen further pointed to various constituency initiatives such as vocational training programmes, agricultural support schemes, training for traditional birth attendants in rural communities, and scholarships for students across Edo South.

“As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, we have resolved over 20 public petitions from across the country.

“These interventions have made a significant difference in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“We’ve focused on rubber, cocoa, and cashew farming. There are testimonies from farmers whose yields have improved significantly,” he said.

The Senator from Edo South expressed his firm support for President Tinubu’s policies, emphasizing the need for stronger local government cooperation.

He vowed to maintain focus on health, youth empowerment, and rural development.
