Sowore on theft of N750m jewelries: Patience Jonathan should be in prison

Date:

Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has called for the imprisonment of former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan, amid the controversy surrounding the sentencing of 15 of her domestic staff. The workers were sentenced to over six years in prison for allegedly stealing jewelry worth over N750 million from Mrs. Jonathan.

Sowore’s comments follow growing public outrage over the lengthy prison terms handed down to the staff members.

The charges of theft, which have sparked significant debate, have raised questions about the former First Lady’s wealth and financial dealings.

Sowore has suggested that attention should be directed towards Mrs. Jonathan’s sources of such substantial wealth, adding fuel to ongoing calls for greater accountability.

In his remarks, Sowore demanded collective action to secure the release of the detained workers.

He questioned how Mrs. Jonathan was able to afford such expensive jewelry, prompting further scrutiny of her financial activities during her tenure as First Lady.

Posting on his Facebook page, Sowore wrote: “Former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan has detained 15 domestic staff members for over six years while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing N750m worth of jewelry from her.

“Where did she she get the funds to purchase jewelry valued at N750 million?

“Nigeria appears to be the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they themselves looted from the public treasury.

“We must do everything to get them released from unjustified prosecution. Patience Jonathan should be the one in prison.”
