Succour for Edo workers as Okpebholo approves ₦75,000 minimum wage

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has officially approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for state workers.

The announcement was made on Thursday during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of Seventy Five Thousand Naira (N75,000) per. It’s our way of saying thank you,” the governor said at the event.

“We believe this will make a real difference for Edo workers, and in return, we count on your renewed dedication as we build a better Edo together.”

The event, which drew a large crowd of workers and supporters, also served as a platform for the governor to express appreciation for the workforce’s dedication and sacrifice.

Prior to the event, Governor Okpebholo had extended warm greetings to workers in Edo and beyond in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

The statement highlighted the governor’s respect for the workforce, noting their critical role in the state’s growth and prosperity.

Itua described Edo’s workers as the driving force behind the state’s development, saying their commitment helps shape the state’s economy and communities.

He commended various categories of workers including civil servants, teachers, healthcare providers, entrepreneurs, and artisans for their relentless efforts.

According to the statement, Governor Okpebholo has consistently emphasized the importance of prioritizing workers’ welfare through several key initiatives:

1. Improving Workplace Conditions – Focusing on providing safe, comfortable, and productive work environments.

2. Prompt Payment of Salaries and Pensions – Upholding the timely disbursement of wages and retirement benefits.

3. Investments in Training and Development – Supporting programs designed to enhance workers’ skills for modern economic demands.

4. Strengthening Industrial Relations – Promoting peaceful engagement between the government, labor unions, and employers.

“This year’s May Day celebration is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of Edo State’s workforce and reaffirm the Governor’s commitment to their well-being,” the statement read.

It also emphasized the governor’s understanding of the challenges workers continue to face and his administration’s determination to continue addressing them constructively.
